Recap: The Best Goals of the Weekend

Welcome, one and all, to the latest edition of The Goals Post! The aim of the game here is to bring you the very best goals that were scored around the world in the final weekend of July 2016—some you may have seen, others you almost certainly have not.

Let’s get started with a small side from the north of England named Manchester United. After their disastrous trip to China and cancelled derby game, Jose Mourinho’s charges took on Galatasaray on a slightly more acceptable playing surface in Gothenburg. In was fitting that The Mighty Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored his first goal for the Red Devils in Sweden—and it was a beaut…

Portuguese striker Bruma, however, responded with the best goal of the tie…

Everton lost to Dynamo Dresden on Friday evening, but Gerard Deulofeu’s consolation free kick was superb…

Barcelona dismissed Celtic without any issues in Dublin on Saturday and the opener was an increasingly rare moment of beauty from Arda Turan

The International Champions Cup also delivered plenty of action in Ann Arbor, where Real Madrid and Chelsea scored five goals in front of 105,000 eager fans. Marcelo scored a brace and his opener was a genuine ThunderBastard™…

But 22-year-old striker Mariano Diaz topped Marcelo’s effort with a rocket that looped right over Asmir Begovic’s head…

In beautiful Charlotte, North Carolina meanwhile, Bayern Munich completely drank Inter Milan’s milkshake. USMNT striker Julian Green was the hero of the day with a hat-trick. Here’s the pick of the bunch…

A true #PoachersFinish there. Those who are not up to speed with Indian soccer may not realize that Chanmari faced Chhinga Veng on Saturday. Chanmari’s Malsawmfela scored a Beckham-esque effort from near the half-way line…

But that wasn’t the most impressive obscure long-distance goal of the weekend! In the Bavarian division of Germany’s fourth tier, Garching beat Ingolstadt II 3-1 on Saturday. Garching’s third was this 60-yard bomb from Dennis Niebauer

Wowsers.

The 2016-17 Polish Ekstraklasa season played its third round over the weekend, during which Filip Starzynski of table-topping Zagłębie Lubin did this…

Down in Mexico, meanwhile, there was Un Big Mac pour Andre Gignac as the Frenchman scored the cheekiest of chips in Tigres’ 3-0 win over Club America…

But the greatest goal of the game—and perhaps the entire weekend—was converted by Gignac’s teammate Javier Aquino

Take a bow, son!

Over to Japan now, where Sanfrecce Hiroshima were sunk by a lovely goal from Gamba Osaka’s Hiroyuki Abe

Toronto stormed to a 3-0 win over Columbus Crew on Sunday, with reigning MVP Sebastian Giovinco getting the Canucks off the mark with a very impressive shot (albeit one which took a fairly hefty deflection off of Tubasa Endo)…

Now, some highlights from the man formerly known as “the worst signing in MLS history“: Frank Lampard. The English midfielder bagged a hat-trick in NYCFC’s demolition of Colorado Rapids on Saturday…

Finally, though the above were good, here are our three favorite goals from MLS this weekend.

That’s it for this edition of The Goals Post, love to your mothers, see you next time!
