The Telegraph released their list of the top 25 Premier League footballers of all time, and it has certainly been the cause of some conversation.
One of the tiffs that that readers had with the list was the low ranking of David Beckham, who fell all the way to number 21. Similar to Cristiano Ronaldo, one knock against the Englishman is that he left for Real Madrid in the prime of his career. Still, he is one of the most decorated players in Manchester United’s storied history.
United’s number 7 won six Premier League titles after breaking into the first team as a 17-year old. In 1999, Beckham won the Champions League and was the runner-up for the prestigious Balon d’Or award.
Should Becks be higher on the list?
The Top 3 was also a point of contention amongst fans.
Roy Keane comes in at third, a bit high for some people’s liking. However, the Irishman was a complete midfielder that often dominated matches. Arsenal fans won’t like to see him four spots ahead of Patrick Vieira, Keane’s bitter rival throughout the 2000’s.
Placing second on the list was Thierry Henry, who Arsenal fans will argue should have topped the list. Perhaps the deciding factor for the top spot was Ryan Giggs’ loyalty to Manchester United, where he spent his entire playing career. Henry left Arsenal for Barcelona in 2007.
The Frenchman was a goal-scoring machine for the Gunners, and he made it look easy. He left Arsenal as the club’s all-time league goal-scorer, racking up 174 Premier League goals.
Giggs spot at the top is a result of a 24 year playing career at Old Trafford, scoring 114 league goals in total. Operating as a left-sided midfielder most of that time, the Welshman could do it all.
Gifted with pace, trickery, and an eye for goal, Giggs was a six-time PFA Team of the Year member and won the award for the league’s best player in 2008-09 at the age of 35.
No matter which club you are a fan of, it’s hard to argue with Giggs topping the list.
